[ex-temporary] was an exhibition by five artists from the Royal College of Art, sharing a common theme in exposing conflicts between external environment and internal self. The works render out our desires: rhythm, bodily matter, femininity, and guilty pleasure.
Participating artists share experiences of suppression in various contexts (sexual or social) in their respective cultural background, many of which are described as suffocating one’s inner self. The submitted works are embodiments of various responses to such sharp contradiction between the social atmosphere and the artists’ ego.
Each artwork expresses acceptance and embracement of contradictory and often distorted self, away from its correction or acclimation. Non-retinal subjects such as emotions and relations are translated into a visual language, allowing the viewers to sympathize with a bodily form, shifting between the line of uncanniness and intimacy.
